Is chronic snoring or a suspected sleeping disorder preventing you (and your sleep partner) from getting the nights’ rest you need? It could be a type of sleep apnoea known as OSA (obstructive sleep apnoea).
OSA can manifest itself as traditional symptoms or combined with other health conditions like:
- Snoring
- Chronic headaches or migraines
- Obesity
- Cardiovascular disease (including high blood pressure)
- Fatigue
- Depression
- Worn, flattened teeth
- Large neck circumference
- Observed pauses in breathing
How Can a Dentist Help?
Oral appliance therapy works by guiding the mandible (lower jaw) in a forward position, opening the soft tissues that have collapsed together near the back of the throat. This movement holistically increases airflow and oxygen intake. Some individuals see improvement in their sleep quality as quickly as the first night’s use. Others can do away with their CPAP altogether.
How to Get Started
Before we make a dental sleep appliance, you’ll need to have a sleep study conducted with your pulmonologist or physician. If you don’t have one, we can provide a referral. Based on the findings of your tests, your doctor can determine if an oral appliance is appropriate for your specific type of sleep apnoea.
When you’ve been cleared for a dental sleep aid, we’ll take an impression of your mouth and have the appliance designed. About two weeks later it will be ready to pick up.
